Promotion ideas for the music video

Now that we've nearly finished the music video, we've been encouraged to come back to our research on the target audience and think about how our video should be promoted to them.
My initial idea is to advertise the video on Youtube in the advert section of other videos, since the typical target audience that we chose will probably listen to their music on Youtube. I also thought of advertising the song as a cover or newer rendition of the track to appeal to the younger generation.

Mad World Screen shots

this is a screen shot of the editing for the final video for Gary Jules Mad World so far we have uploaded the outside sequence and the pianist sequence as well but on this screenshot it was before we put the footage on. Mattis is are Editor so he will complete the final video for are group project. At the moment we have nearly edited the pianist sequence using some great effects and the lights which we brought in really makes the sequence look more effective to watch and feels like a proper music video. Mattis needs to edit the outside sequence and then the whole project will be complete which we hope should be before Christmas which will be a result as we will finish the project early and to a high standard.

more storyboards

these are some more storyboards that we have made for the filming process one of the sheets is for the pianist shots and the others are for the outside shots the outside shots show all the shots that took during are filming process a couple of weeks back. Having the more storyboards shows that we are showcasing are selfs to show that we can plan the whole video and have the planning process to show that we are following what we designed and sticking to the brief that was set for us. We need to draw out some more pianist shots to back up are ideas so we know when to show are process we can display are work.

Friday 7th december 2012.

Today Matiss is finishing the editing from the footage we have taken so far, Jamie has been writing up session report sheets and Tom has been adding to the storyboard and filling in any missing gaps in our yellow portfolio. Getting pretty tired of this song already...

The crew at work.

Filming in the drama studio - 'The stage' 05/12/12.

Matiss on the camera, since out actual camera operator Jamie was unable to make the date , Ed was playing the role of the pianist and Tom was teaching me how to play the various key's on the piano.

The light's that Steve supplied us proved to be of exceptional use, we placed them around the piano and gave one of the lights a red wash, which gave a nice crimson glow over the piano. However one of the three lights that we had  failed to work, so we were only left with two, but even with one light out of action the other two proved more than their worth in making up for the downed light.

This was one of the close up shots that we had of Ed on the piano, we took numerous shots of Ed on the piano ranging from a pan shot to a close up of Ed playing the keys on the piano.

This is a still of Ed lip syncing the song 'Mad world', we took several takes of Ed lip syncing the song, but since he knew the song word for word, and clearly moved his mouth to match the words of the song, which will prove useful when it comes to syncing the video up with the audio track.

Another shot of Matiss and Ed in the studio, this was where we were taking shots of Ed using mime to pretend to play the piano so it would look more authentic when we got to the editing stage.

A slightly blurry shot comprised of one of our lighting stands which was positioned downstage left of the piano since there was a lack of plug sockets we had to stretch the wires along the floor which proved quite dangerous and our camera operator did catch the wire couple of times, but thankfully no fatality's, however there were some jolted shots and colorful language exchanged with our camera operator and  the wire, after this we re-evaluated and amended the pink risk assessment sheet so it included the dangers of overstretched wires, we decided to use Tom as a 'Grip' to guide the camera operator around obstacles.
Matiss, compiling the footage that we had filmed the previous day, and commencing the editing process.

Current work on the 3/12/12

Today, Matiss has begun to edit the footage we have taken so far with the help of Jamie, whereas I was bringing Tom back up to speed with what he had missed, and explaining what we had done, I was also righting up the work that Matiss, Jamie and myself had been doing the previous day, when we went out to film by addenbrookes. Tom has since been righting up a session report sheet showing our progress and the results of the lessons work.

Filming on the 2/12/12.

Last Sunday, Matiss, Jamie and myself were filming in the field by Addenbrookes hospital. During this 40 minuet filming session we started work on shot's 6-8 (the running to the hill scenes). Since we forgot to take stills on the day, I have posted the post-it notes, showing what we were doing that day. However we did not get around to filming on the hill, since the camera battery was running low, displaying the icon of 19 minuets left.

This is shot 4, a long shot showing the back of the protagonist looking up into the sky. This is the shot that we never got round to filming because of battery related issues.
Shot 7, the hand held camera shot, from the point of view from the protagonist, this was filmed by the fields at addenbrookes hospital in Cambridge.
Shot 8, canted side shot of the protagonist jogging/ walking out from a wall, after looking at his phone.

Location recce

these are the location recce of the possible areas of where we could film are music video. the two locations are the music practice rooms and the drama studio stage respectively for the locations that we could use for the final video. the photos show the rooms that we use and also the possible risks that could happen if we did not create the health and safety sheets to show what are the possible risks are and how we can minimize the risk. with the pink health and safety sheets complete we can then start to film in the area knowing that people are aware of the dangers that are around them and how easily it can be avoided the sheets are a big process in the film production.

Day report sheets and finished narrative sheets.

Location, Narrative story board and 9 key frames sheet's.

Todays lesson we have been filling in some sheets, ranging from the location sheets to the narrative story boarding. I have included images of the sheets we have been filling in so you can see what exactly we have been up to and the progress we have made:

We have also had a meeting to discuss our plans for the future filming of this project, in our meeting we discussed what to do for the locations, what shots we would like to include in these shots. We have also  been attempting the think of a storyboard for our secondary character, who we don't even know who to cast the part for. There have been several ideas but to no avail. However our group has progressed through the sheet planning stage and we now have a narrative storyboard, which we shall develop and further capitalize on. Below is an image of Steve's board of lesson work which I have included since it gives the general lesson plan with all you need to start the story boarding and shot listing process:

Schedule

We have started filling in our music video project schedule. This will show the key dates in our production.

Group Meeting Number 1

In the group meeting we decided upon the roles of each other. Also a starting plan for the tasks to be done was created. Here is an image of the A4 sheet:

Storyboard Timeline

After creating the nine key frames we created the storyboard timeline. We marked the different points on it, such as the types of shots and the 9 key frames. Change in song pace, chorus etc were marked. Here is an image of the A3 sheet:

Nine Key Frames

These are the nine key frames of our music video:
The order is yet to be arranged, but it will change during our planning stages of the music video. The shot types have been written under each key frame and the action is described where appropriate. This gives more information and makes the idea clearer.

Music video moodboard.

Chosen song for music video.

The song we have chosen is 'Mad world' by Gary Jules.
I have also included the first treatment that I have written for this video:

The music video starts with a wide angle shot, on the top of a roof roughly mid day in the midst of a bustling city. In this shot we can clearly see a person standing by the balcony looking down over the city. With his hands folded together leaning resting on the verge of wall. After a few seconds of filming the singer, the camera pans down facing the street from a bird’s eye view, where we can see several people dressed in dark clothes, creating shapes of objects and vehicles using physical and total theatre. This song in general is criticizing Communism since it was written in 1984 and the lyrics themselves are against indoctrination, making people follow a specific scheme or routine in order to become the ‘Perfect citizen’.
After this the camera then pans back up to the singer and zooms in slightly, before returning to the performer’s on the ground, there are also several onlookers in this video walking past and watching although I believe that this adds effect to the video, since this is defiantly an entertainment based video because there is no noticeable story or narrative behind this video. Despite this there is a school bell sound effect before the performers rush out onto the pavement; this could suggest that the song could be related to the visual style of the video. Furthermore I have broken down the song into its respective stanzas explaining what each one is about:

1.     This stanza symbolizes the perspective of an average age man or woman, in which they lead a very dull and repetitive life, where everyone is trying to do their best and get on, but are still not satisfied with their lives.
2.     In this stanza we see that the main character is trying to show that everyone desires a change in their lives, however we are living in a what is called and ‘equilibrium’, it is because of this that we are forced to hide our true feelings in order to fit into society. This results in a bleak world with nothing to live for. Hence the “...no tomorrow, no tomorrow...” this means that tomorrow people won’t exist.
3.     In the first chorus we can see that the element of irony is portrayed in that the main character lives in a society which is supposed to be the pinnacle of perfection and happiness but no such happiness really exists, this frustrates the protagonist in the respect that everyone is feeling depressed yet no one wants to change anything, the second line really emphasises this point where he believes that death is the only true escape.
4.     In this stanza we are told about the main characters child hood, where children are not allowed to be happy and are longing for something that doesn’t exist, whilst at the same time being told that if they wait long enough and are patient it will come. They are groomed into a ‘perfect society’ and are ordered to obey authority without hesitation or doubt.
5.     Finally the last stanza is about the main character being introduced into society. As a child they feel that no one knows them because they have somehow retained some shred of individuality, however as time progresses the main character feels more oppressed and lost, asking the only figure of authority in school, in this case the teacher, what to do “What’s my lesson” but is ignored this is shown in the lyric “looked right through me”, the chorus line is then repeated referring to the previous message, with the slight change suggesting that people should “enlarge your world”, encouraging others not lead boring and tedious lives.

After much deliberation our group decided that it would be the song 'Mad world' by Gary Jules for the following reasons:

  • Nice melody.
  • More effects to include.
  • Numerous camera angles to include.
  • The opportunity to include elements of varied speeds.
  • More suitable venues to perform in.
  • Clear lyrics to lip sync.
